Hello from Boston, MA from a 1st time GSD owner
Hello all, I have been reading threads on here for quite some time now. Atlas is one year old GSD who is full of energy. He goes to daycare during the week while I am at work. This is has been great! It socializes him and he gets to play all day and burn off energy. From the second Atlas and I reunite everyday, he is training. We recently started using a prong collar, under the supervision of a trainer, and it has worked wonders thus far (he still has a longggg way to go). No more pulling on lead, and he actual heels!
Atlas is still extremely reactive towards other dogs while on lead. This confused me at first since he has been socialized to other dogs at daycare since he was 4 months.
Since we do not want to overstimulate him, he does not get any corrections when he is reacting towards other dogs, but we rather just continue to engage him in training so he learns to pay attention to me. I have learned that this is easier said than done. Living in a city, it is difficult to avoid every situation, so we have to learn to overcome it.
That being said, Atlas has come a long way thus far as he use to be reactive towards people, but counterconditioning training helped him overcome that. He still does not like strangers coming up to pet him, but he has enough confidence in me to know that I will not let that happen.
Any insights and suggestions are always greatly appreciated! More to come! Also, below is a picture of my big guy!
