New unexpected owner
Currently have 2 small inside dogs shih tzu 13 years old, (got her at 16 weeks old) , a mixed poodle rescue approx 4 years old ( approx 1 1/2 when he came to live with us, and (3) 7 week old german shepherd puppies.
A neighbor I've known for a few months ( we just moved to the area) had two beautiful german shepherds. She was moving and couldn't take dogs. Both adults and 6 puppies were found homes. She said she was going to take the last (3) puppies to the shelter on the 1st of this month as her new apartment did not allow dogs. They did not have their shots and after knowing of the diseases that spread through the animal shelter , coupled with my naiveness of owning 6 week puppies , I told her id take them in. I found this site to help me, since I own small dogs and none of them that young. I have given them their first set of shots and have found homes for 2 of them . I am giving them away. Both new owners are active people. (both puppies are Black and Tan), and now only have the sable left. My poodle loves him but my shih tzu ignores him and when he's running around the house she growls at him. Having these puppies for the past week, has turned the lives of me and my kids 23 and 19 , upside down. We have arranged our schedules so that someone has been home at all times. They have gone from being outside dogs with their mother to inside dogs and we have been potty training with midnight, 2 am , 4 am , 6 am etc visits to the yard to potty. I'm sooo tired so if I have misspellings, please forgive. :) With much thought, or maybe not much thought ha ha, we have decided to keep the last puppy and have officially named him Dexter, yes the serial killer from the show Dexter, and call him Dex for short. He has already learned to sit and comes when called. He is a very smart puppy. Since this is our first big dog I expect to have many questions and am hoping to use this site to make sure we do things right. |
What a nice thing you did by taking in these puppies so they wouldn't be dumped at the shelter! It's great that you were able to find good homes for two of them - ONE shepherd puppy is usually enough for most people to take on at at time, much less three.
What area do you live? It would be good to find a facility where you can sign up for a puppy class. This is a super smart, active breed that will get big and strong fast, so the sooner you start training the better. Good luck, and have fun with him! |
Thank you!!!!!!! That is a super kind, considerate and compassionate thing to do!!!
I am sure everyone here will try to help you and support you as much as they can!!!! Please post photos and when you have questions, post or PM people you feel can help you! Lee |
Bless you for taking on the pups. So glad you found homes for two and are keeping one. You will do great. I recently lost my 14.5 year old GSD and currently have a small mixed breed puppy - my first "small" dog. LOL! You have dog experience. Even though every breed and every dog is different, you will learn "Dexter" just like you did your other dogs.
I agree. Can't wait to see pictures. BTW, I also have a 23 and 19 year old. If you can deal with young adults, you can handle anything. (I also have an almost 15 year old. He is still sweet.) |

Thanks everyone for your support. I have looked into a trainer to come and spend a few hours with us until we can get Dex into a training class. We live in Hacienda Heights. Which is one of the reasons we decided to keep Dex because there are trails close by that my son runs and would love to have company. However the closest training is in Downey. My daughter called me laughing this morning because along with our usual crying from our poodle when I left for work this morning ( he has anxiety issues from former home) the 3 puppies decided to join him in a chorus at our front door.
yes Jan you are right it prob is similar to raising teens lol i will post some pictures. This one is of my poodle Fluffy AKA Loverboy, because he will lick your face raw if you let him and our Angel Squezette named by my daughter when she was 6 years old. You can see that fluffy is my devil. Lol. http://i1288.photobucket.com/albums/...ps51548c98.jpg This one is of Dexter http://i1288.photobucket.com/albums/...psd999fc79.jpg http://i1288.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2cd3dc44.jpg http://i1288.photobucket.com/albums/...pse6baaea1.jpg I swear he has grown in just the past week. This is one of Fluffy. We were babysitting a friends 2 rabbits while they where on vacation and Fluffy wanted to make the rabbit feel more at home by climbing into the rabbits home and eating the carrots. Our 13 year old shih tzu is looking on but not getting involved. http://i1288.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1f8f2393.jpg |
I looked up your zip code and plugged it into the trainer search page on the Association of Pet Dog Trainers website and came up with several hits within 10 miles: Dog Trainer Search
