Default Harley and Me.....

I'm the proud "Mom" of a mixed GSD pup since May 2012. I brought him home at 3 months old. His Mom is a gorgeous long haired GSD and his Dad is a handsome purebred Bernese Mountain Dog. Harley will be 1 year old on Feb. 9th and currently weighs about 80 lbs. His looks, his love of "talking" and his "herding" tendencies are all from his GSD mom. His "girth", his thicker fur, his funny/quirky personality and his love of sleep - are thanks to his Berner Dad. He even has a mix of both his mom's and dad's toenails on his back feet. Kinda funny but cool at the same time. Makes him even more unique.

I had a purebred Bernese Mountain dog previously for 8.5 years and lived with a roommate who had a King Shepherd years ago so I loved the idea of a hybrid of the two beautiful and intelligent breeds. My Berner survived EPI at 2 yrs old (mostly prone to GSD's), cancer at 7 yrs old then ended up with DM at the age of 8.5 yrs old that took his quality of life and we had to make the painful decision to say goodbye to him in October 2012.

As Harley approaches his first birthday next weekend, I can definitely look back and say the last 8 months have been a rollercoaster of challenges - good, bad and ugly - but I'm confident that the "worst" is behind us and I've seen such a change in him in the last month in his independence and his ability to understand even more commands and activities.

It's just me with Harley 24/7 and I work from home - so we spend a lot of time together, I am constantly working in training with him on everything from his food/water/toys to random commands to see how much he remembers and I talk to him constantly. He LOVES his crate at night and for naps and has no problem at all going in it when I go out for appointments or socially. He's very responsive to treats for training and I swear he even knows the names of his faves!

My only issues at this point are trying to get him to walk better without trying to herd me (going back and forth from left side to right side) but I"m working with an excellent trainer 1 on 1 with Harley and I and we're seeing improvement. I began using a prong collar with Harley in mid-December 2012 and he is very comfortable with it now and it's only used when he's on leash.

Is there anyone else on this forum with the same hybrid of breeds in their GSD?
