welcome to the forum, You might have a hard time finding a really well bred dog with your budget. If I were you I'd start saving some more
![]() Illinois I believe is Robin (huerta hof) here on the board , ? I could be wrong about her locale.. Hopefully others will chime in with recomendations. Working lines usually go anywhere from 1000-1800 or so Show lines are usually higher.. If I were you I'd aim to save atleast a thousand dollars.. Unless your interested in going the rescue route

You'll want to increase that budget to get a quality dog. $1000 - $3000 may sound like a lot but when you factor in health guarantees including hips, elbows, eyes you will save money if something does pop up. Also most breeders will offer you temperament guarantees, not to mention support for the life of the dog. They'll give you a pedigree that details the genetics of the dog as well
Buying from a good breeder is worth the money

Welcome to the forum! Great that you are starting so early with your search, cause I'm with others about you saving up some more money over the next few months. Unless you want to look into rescues, and there are some great GSD's in rescues. But if you only are paying $300 to $600 for a puppy you are not going to a responsible breeder so won't have any health of temperament assurances. With hip replacements at over $1000 a hip if that ends up being an issue, you can see that paying $1000 for a puppy at the start with a warranty and associated breeder backing it's much better to pay on the front end after doing your research.
Make sure you take a good look at ALL the sections of Welcome to the GSD/FAQ's for the first time owner - German Shepherd Dog Forums <--click that. And specifically --> How to find a puppy!

Hello,
I would check on line for a good Rescue (German Shepherd Rescue) in your area and apply to adopt a dog from them (good rescues do a backgroud check, obviously). They have all kind of Shepherds and mixes: fully grown and puppies, all kind of temperaments and colors to choose from. You might get a dog for which somebody else paid thousands of dollars for just an adoption fee. Good Luck, Rumhelka |

Thanks everyone. Yes I realized right after I posted this that my price range was way too low. I am just looking for a pet companion. But I do want a dog with great temperament and health guarantees. Being that Im not looking to get one till August at the earliest, $1000 is very reasonable for me to put aside. Im not too concerned on color or sex.
