From Belgian Shepherd to GSD

Greetings!

I've finally decided it's time to start looking into my dream dog, a GSD and I am so excited!

I'm not set on getting a puppy if the right rescue comes along. I know younger puppies must be a lot of work and an older dog might need a home more! However, I like the idea of being able to train and bond with a younger puppy (I've only ever owned older rescues, besides a 8 month old Belgian "foster pup" I cared for)

I'm looking forward to learning more while I get my house & yard ready. I've always been drawn to the GSD as a smart companion dog, family dog, protector, and jogging/walking buddy but never had my own. As far as being a guard dog, my requirements are low, a few intimidating barks would be nice if some creep is sneaking around outside the house etc. I live in a nice safe neighborhood & the dog would be safely inside!

Any thoughts on major differences between Belgian Shepherds and GSD's in general? I've noticed many rescues ask about experience with the breed so I'd like to learn about any really unique traits to the GSD.
