Default New Here

Hello, I found this forum under different circumstances. Our boy, Chopper had a seizure Sunday and I found this board while researching the possible cause. He is 4 1/2 years old and a big boy at 105 lbs and it was a complete surprise to me, as a matter of fact I know now that I should not have held his head when he came out of it........he bit my shoulder, but only enough to make me let him go.

I've found some good info here about food having too much grain and picked up some sample of grain free food yesterday. I hope by changing his diet we can avoid another siezure.

Any suggestions, please send them. The vet acted as if it was no big deal, but for my wife and myself it was pretty tramatic.

Hello and welcome to the board. So sorry you had to go through that, siezures can be pretty serious, if he has another one, I would definitely put him on meds. If your vet doesn't make a big deal out of it, find another vet!

hello and welcome;

our 2nd shepherd missy use to have seizures you could tell when one was comming on, her eyes would go glassey, and she would act strange. we would comfort her until it passed, but that was 30 years ago, no meds then, im sure as carolina pointed out that there are meds you can give now. good luck to you and chopper.

Welcome...my vet has a dog that has seizures, but she didn't like how he acted on medication so she has strictly controlled his diet and he's been seizure-free for a long time.

Hello and welcome. Sorry to hear about Chopper having had a seizure. Hopefully, the change of diet will correct this.

Smile Thanks for the Welcome

Thanks all for the welcome. I've had dogs around for a long time, but this is the first German Shepard and his behavior and willingness to follow directions have been way beyond what I've ever scene in a dog before. My wife works from home and he is under her feet all day only going outside when she goes of I get home. We have a fenced lot, so he gets a lot of exersice chaseing the next door dog along the fenceline and fetching balls and sticks.

So far I've brought home some of the Blue and Earthborn foods to move into his diet and we've decided to keep him away from as much corn based foods as we can, since from my reading I'm getting that these can cause high blood sugar. I thought we were providing decent food in the Pedigree, until I realized what the corn products do as far as converting to sugars.

As far as his behavior since the seizure, there has been no change. He still gets excited to go through doors, ride in the car and seems to have had no change in disposition.

Yeah, Pedigree is not a high premium food. We feed Grain Free Kibble to our dogs as well. Good for you for choosing a better diet for him.

Make sure you control every aspect of his diet- like his treats too.

Hi and welcome. Sorry to hear about Chopper's seizure. Hope the diet change helps. I'm a new owner, so I don't have any knowledge to share on that... sorry.
