I am glad I found this place. My husband and I have a German Shepherd mix. We are often asked, "Mixed with what?" Our standard answer is half German Shepherd, Half Lab, and Half Street dog ." Pooka is a rescue (he was on a way to another shelter when we intercepted and told our friend we'd take him) so we really do not know how old he is. He had surgery for bloat on Holy Saturday 2011. It was a bumpy road (someone forgot to tell him he was supposed be quiet - vets were astounded by his upbeat bouncy behaviour).

He's my boy and being that we suspect he is close to 11 scares me but at the same time I am greatful that God has allowed us the honor of being his humans for these past 5 years (the end of January marks 5 years with us). Hopefully the three of us have many healthy and happy years ahead of us, but I can't help but being a little scared.

Anyways, glad to be here and hope to learn as much as I can as Pooka is my first dog (and therefore my bestest doggie evar ).

Just a quick hello from myself and my gorgeous boy Storm (15wks), he is my 2nd shepherd as I lost my 1st to bloat in March last year :-(
I am also new to the forum (only been on it a few days) but already had some very good help and advise

Pooka is an interesting name, where did you get it from?

He came with the name Mookah and we hated it. Since he was 5 at the time (or so we thought until we came across something in his original adoption papers), we didn't want to change it too much. My mom reminded us about The Pooka and we went with it. The Pooka is a shape-shifting spirit from Irish Mythology. King Brian Boru "conquered" him and kept him in the form of a dog (or so the story goes). Since my husband's name is Brian we thought it was perfect on several levels.
