Hi GSD members,
My name is Brendan and I live in Austin, TX. I have just become GSD owner and quickly I've become a proud one at that. I am brand new to being a GSD owner and boy do I have some questions that I sincerely hope someone can help me with. My new main man Oz was in need of a home and somehow how he found his way to me. Anyhow, I had a couple questions... 1.) I have had Oz for about two weeks now. I may be biased but I can tell he is a pretty amazing dog and we have bonded pretty fast. However, Oz just turned 3 and unfortunately wasn't trained the way I'd like him to be and is in great need of some obedience training. Do I still have time to train him being he is 3? I was looking in to obedience courses and of course they are geared towards puppies. Is it worth taking Oz to a class? He understands but does not always adhere to basic commands and is house broken but I know he could be so much more if trained properly. 2.) We have some pretty amazing parks here in Austin, Oz and I are having a great time exploring them. However, when we go and play fetch with his "Chuckit", tennis ball launcher, he always gets the runs. It doesn't last past the park. Is this due to him being excited or is this something I should have checked out sooner than later? Anyhow, any support/insight would be greatly appreciated! Hope all is well, Brendan & Oz |

Welcome aboard!
1) YES!! You can teach a dog at any age. He's never too young. It's a great bonding experience for you as well 2) My husband and I had a dog that always got the runs on our beach walks or anything new. I think it is nerves. Especially if it never happens at home!

1) Yes!! Take him to classes. It's never too late, and big bonus, IT'S FUN! It's a great bonding time and good socialization for Oz. 3 years old isn't old at all for a GSD, as they don't mature until they are about 2 or 3 years old.
2) Excitement and nerves. Happens.

Very much agree with Lesley1905. I think you've realized how intelligent this breed is. You'll be amazed at how fast he will pick things up.
And yes, a training class will be fun, help to bond, and he will learn a lot, as will you. I don't know about the runs thing, so I'll let the experts round here comment on that. ![]() And welcome! Oh and a few pictures wouldn't hurt.

As for being new to the forum...welcome and good luck
![]() Congratulations on your new guy....they are amazing dogs. As for the training, I think it would be great for both of you and your bond and help solidify some good traits. As for the park...probably just excitement, if it becomes more frequent than I would mention it to the vet...can't hurt. I agree pictures!! You can never see too many GSD's!! |

Wow, this site is amazing! Thanks so much for all your replies, a great help.
Yes, I have pictures. I am trying to figure out how to post them now. Isn't it sad I work in the computer industry and I'm still so computer illiterate.

I think there's a way to post them as a thumbnail, but I don't know how to do that.

Hey, Welcome from Comfort (Near Fredericksburg, Tx).
You will find a wealth of info and Opinions here. Obedience is good. There is a facility in Hutto called Triple Crown. I have not been there, but have talked to a few others that did group obedience and liked it. But like any place, you always have to evaluate it on your own. Good luck.
