Default Hello GSD lovers! looking for puppy:)

Hi, New here, looking for another puppy after not having one for 10 years. Last 8 we had a golden retriever that we got from a "reputable" breeder that had her hips done at 4 months due to severe dysplagia cataracts at age 2 and she died a few months ago at age 8 from cancer....so we are back on track wanting another shepherd. Not sure which way to go this time around, after so much research on the last breeder and bombing that time..lol. Hope to find the perfect puppy soon for our family. Lots of information on this site. Can't wait to spend time here and read and learn.

Hello and welcome to the board. If you tell us your location we can tell you about reputable breeders in your area.

It's a huge help to us if you go up to the narrow black strip at the top of the page, click on User CP and get your GENERAL location posted. That way is shows up with each and every post to the left (like where my Poconos stuff is located).

Make sure you really take a look at that link qbchottu posted above it will really help you know so much more when you are talking to a good breeder, as well as narrowing down the 'type' of GSD you may be looking for.

As you found out with your Golden, getting a great breeder is key... and just cause they are purebred and registered that's no real guarantee for health.

There are more GSD breeders in Michigan and surrounding areas than there is loose dog hair on my carpets (and that's saying something) . . . good luck weeding out the good from the bad.

By the way, I went all the way to Michigan to get a pup, so you can find some outstanding breeders in your relative area.

Do you have a preference of working lines or show lines? What are your plans for this pup? It will help narrow down breeders and recommendations.

Default Pet Only

We just want a pet, we have kids, cats, and rabbits. After the ordeal we went thru with our golden just have to be cautious I guess. The parents of our golden were OFA certified, so they say. Didn't matter tho when we called and told them about or puppy. By then she was 4 months and family was attached. We spent $1000's on hip surgeries and babied her for 8 years, but she was a wonderful dog. Glad we kept her and had her a part of our family. Do I want to do it again? lol no...We just want a great family pet, we do have a color preference, but that is NOT the most important factor. I think the process of weeding thru all the breeders will be long I'm sure the right one will come along in due time.

Yes indeed, but they are working lines. Looking at the OP's previous threads, they seem partial to black and red, so perhaps a West German Showline would be a better fit for what they would like.

Hi jhoop! I just joined the site as well. Looks like alot of experience here. I just sold a puppy to a family that went through the exact same thing. They had a GSD that got severe displaysia at 4 months and they spent thousands on his care. He still lived until about 7 years old but they had to put him down because his quality of life was so bad. When I asked them what questions they asked of the breeder they really didn't ask anything. I think it is also helpful when the breeder offers a hip and health warranty on top of the certification of the hips. Good luck!
