names tom!, im a transplant from upstate NY living in huntsville texas now. i have been the happy owner of nicco, a male solid black GSD for about 4 months now, and hes my first dog! he gives me almost ZERO problems, and is a joy to live with. im considering supplementing his current diet ( 4health brand large breed formula, adult, from tractor supply co.) with homemade food as well, give him the best of both worlds.... hes gonna be 7months on christmas day, and hes about 48lbs. hes been on adult kibble ( 4-4.5 cups daily, down from 6 cups daily of puppy kibble, same brand ) for about a month and a half or so...... hes very healthy , active, and up to date at vet...... any thoughts on a diet change ? or should i not even consider it if all lights are green? input is always appreciated!!

Welcome to the boards! I can't comment on a diet change, we usually just feed dry kibble with high quality canned thrown in as a treat occassionally. Gorgeous dog by the way!

I'm transplanted from CT to East TX- welcome to the state and the wonderful world of gsds. Nicco is beautiful! I tend to agree with you that if he's doing well on that food stay with it.

I don't know anything about home-cooked diets but if you ever decide to go raw, I know a couple of really good suppliers in this area.

thanx everyone for the well wishes, its nice to hear from ya..... its also nice for ppl to appreciate nicco, he sais thanx. the number one question i get when we are out together is " is that a german shepherd?" i knew that the black gsd wasnt terribly common, but im suprised at how many ppl ( dog lovers included ) just didnt know that black was an coat color for gsd!! they usually think hes mixed with something lol so its great to hear from ppl that appreciate him!!!
