I just adopted my german shepherd. He has zero training so I'm kinda wondering where to start? Is one year old too late to train?
ALSO the person who I got him from did give me AKC papers for him. They put him at 1 year old. But he has drooping/hanging skin like he's much older. I attached some pics. Does he look healthy to you guys? I'll be taking him to the vet soon for a general checkup anyway, but I thought I'd get your opinions. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Hello and Welcome, thank you for giving that handsome boy a forever and loving home. In some of the pictures he does look a little overweight and not so in others. When you take him to the vet he will have a better idea if he is overweight or not. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Welcome from Orlando as well!!
![]() Your pup is beautiful! I wouldn't know much about age, as I am definitely no professional... but he does look young to me. Maybe like 1-2 (ish). I'd start training from the beginning... basics... sit, down, stay.. etc. That will give you all time to bond and him listening. Good luck with him!

I think he looks like a happy, healthy, young GSD.
![]() Dogs are never too old to train.

He could easily be 1. If this is your first pure GSD you may not be aware that the drooping, hanging skin in the neck, chest area is normal. Make sure you bond with him for a couple of months then start training. He may be slightly overweight, if at all. He looks great to me.

Hello from Central Florida as well!! (im about an hour from Orlando) he is very pretty. Practice the NILF (Nothing In Life is Free).. make him sit for everything he wants- to be fed, to be petted, to get a treat, you go through doors first, etc. there is a lot of info on these boards, and never to old to train!
good luck with him!
