Default Hello

Hi there brand new to the forum. I am from Oklahoma, really looking into getting a GSD in the next couple weeks, my fiance has a small amount of allergy to certain dogs so we still have to visit a few breeders before i can scoop one up. Went to petsmart today and played with a lab and she was fine. It seems that most dogs she has allergies to are the ones that arent bathed or brushed on a regular basis. I am really hoping that it works out. I put my mini Schnauzer down about 6 months ago and im finally to the point where i think i can get another puppy, he was 14. This will be my first large dog. Looking forward to researching this wonderful breed some more and hopefully continuing to be part of the community with my own German Shepherd in the near future.

Hello from Dallas! We've got some really nice breeders in the North Texas/Oklahoma region. What lines are you looking at?

Yeah ive seen several from Texas that looked like awesome breeders. To be honest I haven't a clue yet. There is some smaller breeders around my area, my biggest problem is I most likely wont be able to spend much more then 7 to 800 on a puppy. Might end up waiting a little longer and saving up though.

Welcome aboard!

There are a lot of people on here able to give advice to you on good breeders in your area. Wait and invest in the perfect dog for you and your family. "Buy quality, cry once" as they say.

Anecdotally of course,(I'm no medical professional) some individuals that show a slight allergic reaction will build a tolerance to a specific animal after they are around it for a while. Sometimes people are sensitive to a particular dog's dander or saliva, so that can be an issue as well.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. Yeah i wont be getting one unless her allergies can handle it. I think we may go look at some pups today, not to buy but to expose her to the breed and "fingers crossed" she does ok lol.

Is she on any kind of medication for her allergies? I had a drippy nose and itchy eyes all my life and it wasn't until after I developed asthma in my late 20s that I had allergy testing done. Turns out my #1 allergy is to dust mites, but #2 is cats (had them my whole life), and #3 is dogs tied with household dust. One thing I refuse to do is give up my pets, but my asthma is completely controlled with medication, as well as a HEPA air filter in the bedroom and on the vacuum. Allergies, unless they are truly severe, do not necessarily mean you won't ever be able to have a pet. She should see a doctor about her allergies if she hasn't already.

Not really shes on OTC stuff when they flare up but thats it really. We have a little teacup yorkie, he doesnt shed at all or bother her allergies at all. We havent gotten a air filter for the house yet, yesterday the inlaws bought us anawesome Dyson though so i know that will help some. We have been talking about getting her to the doctor soon for testing but havent made it there yet. Thanks for the tips, may have to schedule an appointment to check all her different types.

Unfortunitly you will have to wait a little longer and save up more money.

A well bred working line GSD will cost you around $1,200-$2,000

A well bred showline GSD will cost you around $1,500-$3,000

What kind of temperment, drive and energy level are you looking for?

What do you plan on doing with this dog? Will he/she just be a pet or do you want to get involved with Sch, agility, rally, flyball, dock diving, herding, etc?

Although temperment and health are the most important thing when getting a puppy, do you have a color preference?

Working lines tend to be more solid black, bicolor and sable. Showlines tend to be more black/red, black/tan or solid black.

Good luck in your search and welcome to the forum!
