Hi there! My Name is Wes from NJ.
I don't own a GSD but family members have had them. I'm looking into getting a GSD but i have some questions about them. My Mother was bit once on the hand by a GSD Named (Randy). She broke a finger so my Mother is afraid of them after that happened. (Randy) Was a older GSD and was in a'lot of pain so that's why she bit and my Mother understands that. But still afraid of them and does not trust them. So shes putting up every excuse in the book not to let me get one. We have a Female Cocker Spaniel, a Female Boston Terrier, and a cat. Shes saying that a GSD could not be trusted around them since there all small. And the GSD could kill them if he wanted to do so. So i'm asking how to pervent that and what to look for in a GSD. I'v always been gravitated tords the GSD's. I 'v been reserching for a few days now about them so i now what to expect. Sorry for the long read. Thanks -Wes |

Hello Wes, Welcome to the Forum! I am glad you are doing your research. It sounds like you have some time so do lots of research and learn all you can about the breed and the different types of lines. Right now, it sounds like you are still living with your parents, so you will need to respect them. This might mean you have to wait until you move out before you are able to buy the type of dog that you really want. I am not sure how old you are or how long that will be but peace at home is worth it now and later you will love your freedom even more. German Shepherds are wonderful breeds but your mother is partially right. They can be very dangerous if not properly trained. They also can be very pushy with smaller animals. Many people have german shepherds and other dogs / cats living in harmony so it can be done. However as long as your mother is against it, you will never really have peace in your home with a German Shepherd. I recommend find some German Shepherd groups such as a local schutzhund club and go visit and see the dogs. Learn about the dogs in different avenues and watch them work. Ask lots of questions. read. Network with people who have dogs. When you in a position to have your own one day you will be ready and will have much more enjoyment in your life with your German Shepherd Dog!

Welcome! There's a ton of info on several forums of what to look for when picking out a puppy if that's what you want. Since your mom is concerned about biting, remember that gsd puppies are known as landsharks because they love to bite bite bite! You might consider adopting an older pup or a dog. Good luck! So what color is your '92 Camaro?

I'm 19 and still do live at home. So my father loves the idea he had them growing up. And i went to a agility course up in PA. And just love how they move and work. My Mother is slowly saying yes but still wants to see what you guys say on this forum. Thanks all for the welcomes and help. -Wes |

Be sure to take your pup to a training class- maybe your mom would go and watch and see how incredibly brilliant your pup is. Look for an obedience training club in your area, the classes are usually less expensive than a class in a store
