I am here partially to decide whether to get another GSD or not. I currently have a 14-year-old mixed GSD and before than had a large full GSD (and I can't tell you what his lines were, but he was bred from German stock and his name was King Kodiak IV or something on his papers but we called him Bear). I decided not to spring a couple thousand dollars for a puppy because so many dogs are destroyed due to no homes. I was looking at a border collie mix in training program through a no kill shelter, when I ran across a 17-month-old Czech GSD that is owned by a person who shows dogs. She tells me this dog was given to her, and it has been brought back twice because it chased cats, it's working and not show (which I prefer working, actually). The dog is said to be good with kids and other dogs and displays protectiveness. At 17 months, I realize a GSD is still an adolescent. I understand the breed well. My previous full GSD, Bear, was a wonderful dog, but a handful. A trainer said it best, "A GSD can be like owning a gun and you are the trigger." That was true of Bear. I do know what I'm getting into with the breed and I prefer a working dog, as I'm an active person myself. However, I'm trying to decide if a dog that has been taken back twice is something I should be leery of, or if the dog was simply taken by two people who had no clue what a GSD involves (one girl brought it back within 24 hours because it chased her cat). I am going to go visit this dog next week and try to get a feel for it.
