Hello:
I took in a 3 year old GSD this weekend. By way of background, I got Viktor this Saturday from the Animal Rescue League. It was not a typical adoption. I was contacted by the sister in law of a deceased heroin addict. They found the dog locked in a room with no food and water, covered in urine and feces, wearing a “shock collar”. The dog catcher tranquilized him. He was malnourished and dehydrated. He was taken home by the sister in law, but he needed more care than she could provide. She took him to the ARL, where he received medical care and was neutered Friday. I took him home Saturday. He was been adjusting well. Still having a few indoor accidents. I am not sure he was ever properly house-trained. He walks good on a leash, with some correction. He is a very bright boy and eager to please. He has had one “nipping” incident, but the person “hovered” and went for the head too fast, in my opinion. He is still a bit skittish, given he has been out of that place for just over a week. |

Welcome to the Forum and thanks for rescuing the boy.
Give him time to settle in and make sure that everything you do with him, happens in a controlled environment. Let only people, where you know, they won't report you if he nips, approach the dog for training purposes if that is what you are trying to do. I know you didn't ask for advise but I thought I'd say it anyway because it sticked out. I am pretty sure that it'll take a while to recover from that kind of environment, he's coming out from. So good look with everything and give him the time he needs. Sounds like he's already on a good road and that he's found a great home with you

He is gorgeous! Thank you so much for giving him a place to be loved. Agree with Mrs. K on the socilization/training deal.
Sounds like he is a little unsure and probably defensive given his background.
