A formal hello to everyone! I've been lurking around this forum for a while and recently realized I'd never given an introduction to myself. My name is Alexis and I live in Albany, NY with my 27 month old GSD Aiden vom HausDaka. The original intent on joining this forum was to learn more about raw feeding, but I have found that there is so much more useful information that just that!
The story behind Aiden starts back in November 2009. I was working at a vet in the kennels, and saw this little boy in his cage and immediately fell in love. Turns out that my boss at the time was a breeder, and Aiden had been returned to her that day by his original owner. She just dropped him off with a long note that pretty much explained that she didn't have time to train him and was mad that he wasn't able to be house-trained in the short 8 weeks that she had him. He also "terrorized" the cat. Aiden, who at the time was named "Gardin", had to spend the next couple weeks at the vet due to his horrendous kennel cough and Giardia. I was in school at the time, and spent every day of my Thanksgiving break nurturing him. I vowed that if he was still there by the time I came home for Christmas break that I would do anything it took to make him my own. December came by and I took Aiden in for a trial placement. He was now 5 months old, fearful, sickly, and totally untrained. With one night and day spent with myself, my family, and my Schutzhund club, Aiden was a totally different dog. I realized that I couldn't give up on him now, and let him down like his first mommy. I stayed at school 4 nights a week while friends and family cared for Aiden, and I got my boy on the weekends. Leaving him during the week was the hardest, but made me appreciate the time that I did get to spend with him, and the kindness of the people who helped us during the week. We started officially training for Schutzhund when Aiden was 6 months old, and he took to it immediately. While he still struggles with some mild confidence issues, he LOVES learning new things, and I love seeing his excitement when he hears that magic word "YES" and knows he's doing a good job. He passes his BH is October 2010 with flying colors, and we will be working towards his SchHI for next spring. While Aiden is my first German Shepherd, and was totally an accidental addition to my family, I have never once regretted making that decision. I have never felt real loyalty and love from any previous dogs as I feel from my Aidy boy. I know that he would die for me, and I would do the same. I'm home from school now, and lavish in every moment we spend together. I'm so glad that I have found a group of people such as yourselves, who feel this same, indescribable feeling for their dog. I look forward to sharing more of Aiden's life journey with you all. I hope that I can share what I have learned with Aiden so far, and hope to gain some knowledge from your own experiences. ![]()
