Default Hello everyone

Hi, I'm Matt from central new york. Just found this site, and excited to be a be able to learn from owners and not authors.. I'm not yet able to welcome GSD into my life just yet, but can't wait till I am. I'm in the army and a few years ago when i was in Iraq I had a mutt that lived at our COP who was very GSD like in both look an mannerisms. Save us on countless occasions, and was always ready to play. So because of him, I have a deep love and appreciation for the breed.

There's nothing like the company of a dog. I'm so glad you had one when you needed him most. Thank you for serving our country and I'm looking forward to the day you can post pictures of your gsd pup!

Hi, Matt! Happy to have you on this forum. Thank you for your service to this country.

Dogs really make a difference over there, don't they? I've never been to Iraq, but have been to Afghanistan several times (as a civilian), and no matter what kind of day I was having, being around a dog would cheer me up. Even just watching a K9 unit at work would make me feel better about life.

Would love to hear more about how the Shepherd mutt saved you guys, if you're comfortable sharing.

All the best and welcome to you!
Jennie

Hi there Matt! Welcome for FL!

First off, I want to say thank you for serving our country and keeping us all safe! My brother is in the Army and currently in Iraq. It's definitely a huge sacrifice to make, and I appreciate what our military does for us.

Second, I hope someday you can enjoy the company of another dog, whether it be a GSD or some other lucky pup (when the day comes, be sure to post some pictures)! There's nothing like the company and unconditional love a dog gives to our lives! It's truly a blessing! I am glad you had one by your side when you needed that most!

Welcome to the forum! =)

Thank you every one for the warm welcome . And yes the K9 units are increadible... Im in afghanistan right now and live right next to the kennel...they can do some amazing things, all the breeds..switch from combat mode to dog mode at a moments notice. But my mutt in Iraq, I think he was even more amazing because everything he did he learned himself. He taught himself to sniff out explosives, and would always go out with us when we went on a dismounted patrol and sniffed out a few that we might have walked right over... He also stopped other dogs from coming onto our COP and causing problems.. and usually could tell you an Iraqi was coming to the gate before we could see them, and he learned it all himself. It was always funny when the K9 units would come to the COP, he would stand next to me starring at the other dog, with one ear to the side, one ear up and his head cocked to the side... and the bombsniffer would stand there all proper.. Always made me laugh...
