Default New from New Jersey!

Hi everybody! I'm Vicky.

I joined a few months ago but never posted. I am senior in college currently for a degree in Equine Studies. Anyways, I have been doing a lot of research on dogs lately since I would like to own "my" first own dog soon after college. I have had dogs my whole life but I didn't consider them to really, truly be mine. I have always loved the breeds that everyone seems to love to judge, i.e. Dobermans, Shepherds, Pits, Rotties, Akitas, etc. Funny how that works. The first dog I ever wanted was a German Shepherd, but my parents were too caught up in stereotypes and refused. I ended up with a lab (who I absolutely loved anyway) but was not what I really wanted. It's fine since I am much more mature than when I was 10 or so and am much more confident in what I want.

I have been looking into Dobermans the past few months, but I find myself now wanting a Shepherd more. I understand they have personality differences but I know their energy level is similar and I would be able to properly care for both. I'm sure people on here will voice their opinion between the two, which I am more than happy to hear since it will help my decision. I won't be able to own a dog for another year or so. I have e-mailed a Doberman and Shepherd breeder but did not receive responses as they are both very busy people. Also, I have been in touch with a Catahoula Leopard Dog breeder since that is also a favorite breed of mine. I won't have a second dog for quite some time, but I am getting myself ready for when I can.

Enough rambling, if you want to know anything else, please ask!

Welcome Vicky!

As far as Dobermans and German shepherds, my sister owns dobermans and I, of course, own a GSD. The difference between our dogs is that my dog is more intelligent, more handsome, and….can you tell I am biased?lol

Thanks for your reply! LOL, I knew you guys (of course!) would be more biased here and I have read up on a doberman forum as well to try and get both biased views to make a neutral view, if that makes sense. They are both beautiful to me but I haven't owned either so I can't make judgements until I make a decision. (:
