I have never owned a G.S. before but have always liked them.I figured I would give this one a shot.It is probably about 2 years old and is a male.It will be neutered before coming home. I have a 5 year old son and a year old chihuahua. Not sure on the dogs background as it was found wandering the streets. The handlers at the pound say it's good with other dogs and kids and of course we tested him with a small dog and with my son and the dog seemed to do well... I would like some encouraging words on dog training/obedience training G.S at home? Thanks Alot!!

Where are you located? I would suggest contacting a trainer to help you from the start
Congratulations! And also please don't ever leave your son and him unsupervised!

Congrats and Thank you for rescuing!
I second the advice to get a good local trainer as soon as possible (not PetSmart or Petco) and group classes would be best. Give him some time to settle in which takes adult GSDs about 2-4 weeks if not a little more. Remember that he is likely not coming to you pretrained so don't get frustrated if he doesn't respond to commands yet because he probably just needs to taught what they mean. Get him on a structured schedule as soon as possible so that he knows what to expect out of daily life and he will be a much more relaxed dog. Last bit of advice: post lots of pictures and come here often to give updates or ask advice! :-) |

Remember to give him (and your other dog) adjustment time...about 2 months. This simply means a careful eye. Keep a journal too so you can start to get to know his temperment. I know a family that adopted a male GSD w/ a 4 year old and it worked out great! The adjustment time allows your GSD time to grow protective of his new pack, which will include your son and the little dog.

Wow,thanks guys for all the replies...: ) I have always wanted a German Shepherd but have never owned one before...I have been reading alot about them and some reviews make you second guess...I took my chihuahua up to visit the G.S. at the pound and she was petrified of him...The G.S. didn't really do anything he was really curious and wanted to sniff her...I know you guys are probably thinking oh what a combination a chihuahua and a G.S....I have read they have prey instincts...I just hope they both will get used to one another and the G.S. will accept my chi as part of the pack....
We don't pick him up from the shelter til tommarow...He will be neutered and utd on shots....Haven't really picked out a name for him yet but are thinking Zues! Thanks Guys for your responses, sure do appreciate them...We were looking into taking the training classes at Petco because we heard private trainers can be Very expensive...Do you guys know what the usual cost of hiring a trainer and the length of time! Thanks Again...We really wanna give this Dog a shot and a Good Home! |

I hope it goes well. Take it slow. I hope you have a crate ready for him. It will be important not to leave him to his own devices when you are gone. He will need a place for sanctuary from kiddo and other dog also.
