Love the name Zeus great choice!!! It will take your GSD a few months to adjust to you, your family, and other dog. With patience and training though he'll be good to go just be consistent and monitor him around your son and chi. My GSD is great with my 6&9 year old, but she can forget she is 90 lbs. at times and lay on them making them scream Zoe moooove, lol Their big lovers, love to play, and need a lot of exercise and socialization. Honestly I think exercise and socialization are the most important things to focus on the first month while he is acclimating, and then training. Good luck and post pics soon

Taste of the Wild, Orijen, Blue Buffalo, Fromm, Before Grain, Wellness, Natures Balance, or Canidae are all decent choices. GSD's seem to have sensitive digestive tracts and are prone to allergies from what I've noticed.

Definitely invest in a crate! Use it as his den to sleep in at night, give him a great treat that he only gets when he goes in there and it'll become his safe haven. I suggest you look into an obedience club in your area for a class rather than a PetsMart. If you become a member classes are generally 6-8 weeks for under $50 and he'll get a lot of socialization at classes. See if the shelter offers any classes, some do. Some trainers will come to your home on an hourly basis and you set the schedule as to how often you need them. I've found that PetsMart is not always the best priced or best qualified, so do some research. Above all, give Z and your guy time to adjust, stay calm and enjoy!
I've always fed Nature's Variety but there's a lot of info on the forum regarding feeding. All those just mentioned are readily available and proven successful. I use NV because I can get it at my vet's, it's grain free and they love the kibble and raw patties |

Congrats! What a fabulous adventure you have in store. I adopted an adult GSD several years ago and it was the very best decision. I now have three! As others have said: Train, train, train, and not Petsmart. My dog wouldn't wag her tail for about a week and when she finally did, I cried. I was so thrilled. You've done a wonderful thing. Have patience and a ton of fun. You won't regret it.

Will he be wormed before you get him? Diarrhea can be due to parasites. It can also happen very easily by a quick change in diet.
I rescued both a young Catahoula and young female GSD last year. They are wonderful dogs for us. It takes work and time, but a rescue can be a really nice dog!! Hope all goes well. Ask people here if you need advice or have questions. They are helpful. He is a a good looking boy. Love the dark colors. Last edited by Samba; 09-01-2010 at 09:22 PM. |

Congratulations. Have patience and be consistent and I'm sure you guys will do fine. Can't wait to see pictures when he's home.
