My name is Bobbi. My husband, kids, our furbabies and I live in Colorado. We have a beautiful German Shepherd named Lacey, a Beagle named Toby and 3 cats lol. Lacey and Toby are best friends and play and snuggle all the time. They are both high energy but so is our family tso they are a perfect fit. My husband is in the military so we are originally from OK but have lived in NY and CO due to his service. We adopted our Beagle from NY while we were there. I have helped do rescue transports for a friend in OK that works with all kinds of dogs to get them out of kill shelters and into long term rescue, foster or permanent homes. My friend told me about a shelter in OK while we were down there on vacation that was about an hour away from my home town. They had 10 dogs at the time but only 6 dog runs so they had puppies doubling and tripling up. My husband and I had been looking for a German Shepherd and Lacey was listed. We went to see her with no promises of adoption because our kids were 8 and 5 at the time and I wanted to see how she was first. So we went there and she was shy but came up to the kids and gave them kisses. The shelter was very small and the adoptions took place out of the city hall building which was about the size of my house (town population was only a couple thousand people). The shelter part was OUTSIDE and the dogs had a tin roof over them and tarps half way up the fences to help keep them warm. This in DECEMBER! So we decided to adopt her. She was TERRIFIED of everything. She wouldn't get in the car because she was afraid, she didn't want us to lift her up, she was afraid to walk on tile floors, side walks, etc. She was afraid of all dogs, big and small and terrified of people other than kids. But we have worked with her for the almost last 2 years and she has molded into a beautifl girl. She is still a little shy when she meets new people but will go up slowly for loving. She loves going to the dog park now and believe it or not her favorite thing is going into the car and she even loves going to Petsmart lol. Anyway just wanted to introduce myself and tell you about my gorgeous German Shepherd. I was also wondering, where would the appropriate place be to ask a question about her fur color?

What a happy ending! Her behavior about being a standoffish and cautious of strangers is very typical gsd behavior. Thanks for giving her such a great home! We used to live in CO too, what town are you near?
For a question about color, go to the forum page and you can list it under genetics. I think there's a thread about color there now. Last edited by Stosh; 08-06-2010 at 11:33 AM. |
