Default Emergency Down

So I have been trying to work on Gunner's down, so he has a solid down. I can have him sit and take multiple steps back, then point to the ground and say down (does that perfect). But lets say I were to call him then say " down ", he takes a few steps and gets closer to me then he goes down. I want him to ' hit the deck ' (as many of you say) when I say down; advice?

Start teaching it from the standing position. Stay right in front of him and lead/lure him into the down. Reward, release and do it again.

Some things I did - got it down while in motion first (while walking with him at heel)

And one thing I was shown (if he gets a ball reward) was to always throw the ball BEHIND him not between you and him for the reward. It really seemed to help me.

I never thought about having him stand and teach him from there. Thank you very much and I will work on that tonight!

I also never thought of getting the down in motion while he is in a heel.

Thank you both very much!!
