When I hug my dog I don't hold her hostage and its always when she approaches me for that kind of interaction. I will wrap my arms around her and put my head on her body but if she wants to leave she can. Only time I truly hug my dog and actually "hold the hug" is at night when she is cuddling in bed. Also I wouldn't let anyone other than her immediate family hug her. I think they can stress dogs out in certain situations.
