What exactly does your dog need to do to get a HIC?
I am just curious, I think J would thoroughly enjoy herding once his confidence goes up a bit. He has high drive and thinks he has to herd everything in sight. |

The HIC is a Herding Instinct Certificate. The dog goes into a ring with the evaluator and sheep and they see if the dog has any instinct.
Does the dog look at the sheep? Does the dog drive towards the sheep? Will the dog 'work' the sheep (run behind them to keep them moving)? Very basic stuff - but fun!

Fun indeed! You should give it a try.
2 of my doggers have the HIC. 1 will go onto herding instruction/trialing as soon as we finish up her RE.They are offerring the HIC at the Nationals in October!

Wow, I didn't know this was that simple. I wonder if I can find any places in my state that do this! Thanks for asking about HIC.

I found our Instinct Tests by looking on the AKC website under Events.
There is also Tending style of herding and I have read that it is great fun for the GSDs! There's a yahoo group dedicated to tending; Also, a GSD herding group on yahoo as well. Good luck!

What's the minimum age a dog can go for the HIC?
