Hello everyone. So my 4 month old male gsd pup keeps panting all the time. We live in Canada and its quite cold here. Our house is on the cold side too for sure. I take him on two 15 min walks everyday and 40 min hiking on the weekends so he isnt being over excercised either. He runs around alot and is eating and drinking fine. He pants almost all the time even when hes sleeping and in the crate. Hes panting now while chewing on a bone.. Could it be stress ? Are GSD's usually like this ? My last shepherd didnt pant like that though i used to take him out on very long trips so he was always tired but he ended up with hip problems so i am avoiding the extra excercise for now. He eats raw food and gets plenty of water. He is an energetic boy always playing. Took him to the vet and the vet says large breeds are like that. Im leaning towards stress because of limiting excercise or if its natural? Not sure.. does your gsd pant all day too for no reason ? Thanks in advance
On 13 January you had an eight month old GSD named King who had HD. Then the next month you had a 3 month old GSD named King. This King has something wrong about every 2 weeks?
Two different dogs. First King was put down end of January. I got a second pup right away and named him King again. Make sense there kiddos ?
And who told you me and my dog are stressed out ? What's wrong with you ? We are having so much fun and he is having an amazing time. I dont have to explain to you everytime my situation. If you dont like what you read then you dont have to reply. But instead you reply with useless comments and then you end up sounding like a fool.. He is panting literally 24/7, should i stay quite ? Did i sound like I was stressed ? I asked a simple question and was wondering how other GSD's are and if they are similar.
Kingston, the poster thought YOU were stressing out, not the dog! They didn't realize it was a different dog.
If it were my dog, yes, I'd be a little concerned. How long have you had the pup? And was he an indoor or an outdoor dog before you got him?
The only time I've experience this sort of panting was with a rescue who'd been kept outdoors in February. Needless to say, she got a bit overheated when she was moved indoors. She'd pant, and the inside of her ears would get really pink as she tried to cool herself off.
Shedding time, a month or so later, was LOTS of fun! :rolleyes2:
If the dog has been mostly an indoors dog, I'd get his heart and lungs checked out.
Saw that, just didn't know it was so bad the pup had to be put down. I've known dogs who have had HD since they were young and have gone on to live good lives.
Poor little guy. Sorry for your loss.
Regarding the subject of the post, I'd probably be concerned too. My main concern would be illness or overheating, but if the vet did a good workup I'd not be overly worried. Is it hard panting or just normal?
It could be the temperature. I have had him for almost 2 months. He is pretty heavy and big boned but lean, 18 weeks old and weighs 54 pounds (raw fed around 2lb a day). Panting changes, sometimes heavy and sometimes not heavy. When is a blood check recommended ?
