Perianal Fistula?

OK I have had a few German Shepherds in my lifetime but this is a first. We are being told that our Skoka could have the subject issue. For some time we thought she was struggling with kidney issues we would see a blood droplet occasionally take her in and she would get treated for a UTI and we would go on. Lately she started to lick more down there and on her bottom so we took her back to the Vet and they were doing some testing. That is when I noticed that her fur was wet at the top of her back leg and with further investigation I found some discharge. We took her to the hospital and was told she has an open gash near her anus, well, on the side, they told us to take her home and give her a regimen of anti-biotics. There was nothing they could do because of infection. They thought she had a ruptured anal gland.
A few things we are struggling with is she is 11 years old, nearing 12. When we tried to clean her up some we noticed all of her area around her anus, and lower between her legs was almost like raw and for a lack of better term oozey, very black looking,
We have been reading up, and calling a specialist. He says that it is very expensive and that she may not recover without long term treatment, and very possibly not at all.
Anyone had any issues with this, or is familiar. They had also told us it could be cancer. Currently we have to wait a week before they are going to do anything else with her,
I may try to add pictures tomorrow, I am new here and this is my first post ever,

First, Welcome.

Second, so sorry it's under this circumstance. I wish I had advice for you. PF is not something I have ever dealt with personally.

I hope that the specialist can give you some good advice. I do know many on this board have had varied success treating PF and hopefully your pup can get some relief.

Sorry this is the reason for your joining Been there done that twice with PF's on two of my gsd's, tho mine were younger...My suggestion is to go to the PF site perianal-fistulas and join their PF email group...TONS of great info , suggestions, vets in your area that may be savvy with PF's..

I would right now, have your vet shave up the entire area , keep it clean, if she has an infection, which she probably does, antiobitics, it doesn't have to be a "death sentence"...yes some of the meds can be expensive, you just have to figure out what will work for your dogs situation...You can also try applying Desitin (baby diaper rash creme),,to the affected areas twice a day...This has helped close up 'holes', when some have had relapses..

Definitely try and post some pics...I'll check back later

Our rescue was diagnosed with PF at around 2 years. We were prescribed Atopica
We got our atopica a with the help of our gsd rescue .. (from Duke Medical Center where most of the rescue folks worked) It was expired for human use but still able to be used on animals... We used the pills for a few months and then went on to use protopic ointment ( which we ordered from Canada) applied locally near the anus every other day ( for the rest of his life) ... he has since passed away (with cancer) but never had another flair up after using the protopic ointment .... we also began feeding him a "novel protein" (something he had never eaten before) as per the vet... we used lamb no more beef or chicken . I wish you luck .

Thank you so much for the replies thus far, this is very good and gives us hope, I am sure you know we love this dog very much, I mean German Shepherds are the absolute best!
I will get pics, we spent this evening cleaning her up and "baby-ing" her with much love.
