I have 2 dogs, one is 4 the other is 7 months old. the puppy had diarrhea so we tested him and he had giardiasis. So we gave him antibiotics and panacur. Did it resolve but his symptoms went away. Otherwise perfectly healthy he's not symptomatic now. But we tested the other dog and she tested positive also despite having no symptoms. At the recommendation of the vet, we treated her too.
Her stool test (the older dog) is clear. The pup is not. He has been on 3 courses of antibiotics and anti-parasitic medicine almost for 3 months now. The giardiasis OVA and microscopic test is negative meaning there's less and not detectable but the antigen is still positive.
Here's the problem. We sanitized everything and started both dogs on the medicine. We sprayed diatomaceous earth all over the yard and pick up poop right after but somehow the puppy is still infected.
My older dog is a very sensitive dog and she throws up from the medicine, looses her appetite, and her intestines growl and medicine just wreaks havoc on her. I only give her the panacur, no flagyl. Her stool test was clear last time so Im wondering if it's necessary to treat her when she doesn't do well on medicine. I hate prophylactic antibiotics and things that mess up their gut flora. I give her probiotics with it.
Any suggestions?
I think it's safe to say that if giardiasis is still showing up on an antigen test, it must be treated despite no symptoms? 2 vets Ive talked to say so.
