My poor Diva currently has her third occurrence of hot spots on the top of her head. The first one appeared on September 4 (pictures below are in date order). At that time, the vet prescribed a 1-week course of antibiotics.
About one week after finishing the pills, she got another one, slightly further back on her head (September 24). Now she was given a 2-week course of antibiotics. At this time they said they would do a scraping if it happened again. So, about one week after finishing the medicine, we had outbreak number three, again a bit further back on her head (October 15). We had gone away for a few days to a friend's cottage a seven hour drive north. We arrived late Thursday, noticed more scabs on Friday morning, and drove back after breakfast so we could get the scraping done when the scabs came off.
Saturday night found us back at the clinic where they took samples using tape, and some scrapings. My husband works for a medical laboratory and asked if they should do a culture, but that was waived away. Instead they booked her in with the resident dermatologist (who fortunately had a cancellation and was able to see her yesterday). Of course, now they wanted to do a culture and had to take off the newly formed scabs
Now she's on a 3-week course of antibiotics, as well as a topical antibiotic cream, which she hates (her poor head must be so sore). She is now also terrified of the clinic and shakes terribly. I just feel so bad for her She's to go back to the dermatologist in four weeks.
Are we on the right path with the antibiotics, etc.?
