Safe for puppy to be around dog who had KC last week?

Hello! Thanks in advance for your advice. I did some quick forum searches for info on kennel cough, but can't quite find what I'm looking for...

My in-laws are taking care of grandma's dog (a min pin), who was treated for kennel cough about a week ago; the dog was still on meds as of Friday, but I'm not positive when she started. Their 3 adult GSDs haven't caught it, but they are healthy and vaccinated. Bruin has had 2 rounds of vaccinations, but he hasn't had the Bordetella one yet. He's due to get round 3 (and Bordetella) on Friday.

Question is: Is it safe for us to bring our 15 week old GSD over to their house?

Thank you!

The answer is no. If your puppy has not had the bordatella vaccine (oral, intranasal or injection), he does not have immunity and the dog that has KC is still being treated and is shedding the virus. Dogs shed the virus for about three weeks, so Bruin should not be near the sick dogs or be in the same house.

Even if Bruin had just been vaccinated this week, he would need two to three weeks to build immunity effectively.

The new oral administration (Bronchicine oral) is reported to give immunity in 24 hours and, from personal experience, it stopped the spread of KC at my home when a foster dog began showing signs unexpectedly. I only had three sick dogs instead of eight.

Since your dog is a puppy, I personally would not take the chance.

Sabra - female GSD - born April 30, 2012
Sargeant - rescued senior GSD male/foster failure - approximately ten years old (August 2013)
Max - rescued GSD - Dec 22, 2010 to March 7, 2012 - at the bridge
Sable - rescued GSD - at the bridge

Thank you!! Good to know that it takes 3 weeks to stop being contagious too. We won't be visiting for a few weeks then. I appreciate the info!
