Default Strange Leg Pain...Thoughts?

My 5 year old boy is having these episodes where he'll suddenly let out a loud cry, hold up his front left paw for a few seconds, and then when he puts it down and walks on it he has a limp for about 30 seconds. The limp goes away and he returns to his normal self. He runs and plays with my girl as though nothing has happened.

This has been happening about 2x/day for a week. It has happened in the middle of the night when he's lying down, it's happened when he's been seated doing nothing, and it's happened when he's just been walking. I've squeezed and applied pressure to his paw and he doesn't react. I've looked for a splinter and can't find anything.

I have a vet apt this Friday but was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what could be going on?
