Default Coccidias and my GSD Pup

This is my first post so I apologize if I do anything incorrectly. We recently went to a GSD breeder and fell in love with our girl, Zena. She is 8 weeks as of yesterday. We were supposed to bring her home yesterday, however, the breeder called me Tuesday to tell me she has coccidia and is on medication now. She wanted to keep her until at least Friday to monitor her and not put her under more stress. Should I be worried that she has coccidia? Anyone have to deal with this before? I will have to continue her meds once she comes home for another couple of days (full round is 10 days). Will this cause her more stress and make her diarrhea issues worse coming home in the middle of this infection? Any advice is welcome.

Coccidia breakouts can occur even in the best kennels. It's just something young pups are susceptible to and can sometimes pick up. Go with the breeder recommendation to keep her for extra treatment. It isn't hard to administer the medicines - the diarrhea can be a pain though so be prepared for smelly, runny poop. You might even want to let the pup finish up her course of treatment before heading home to you as moving can cause further stress to the body.

she will be fine
thank your lucky stars the breeder wanted to keep and treat her and not send her along sick
coccidia can rear up again in dogs and pups when under stress so it is wonderful the breeder is offering to do this
i am impressed

oh and ask for a small bag of whatever she is eating now or else buy and feed her what the breeder has her on for one less stress for her

My breeder sent my pup home at 8.5 weeks with 5 days of medication for it. It smelled like butterscotch and my pup loved it. The breeder said it is in her soil and she routinely treats her dogs and pups for it. My breeder said she wanted to prevent any stress related problems of going home.

My pup was very well taken care of by the breeder--I felt like I was being vetted to adopt a human child. Breeder contacted me about two weeks after taking home my pup that another pup who had gone to their new home tested positive for giardia. And to be watching for it just in case.

Sounds like your breeder cares about pups, also. It's a good sign. My breeder is very responsive to emails and phone calls. Breeder support is so important!

While balancing on a piece of wood, two inches by four inches known as a 2x4, john and his friend sally both spotted a dalmatian inside a truck with sirens, headed to put out a fire. State what the 2x4 is made of.
