Default Infusing Anal Glands with Antibiotic: What to expect

So they are going to have to sedate them for it clearly..

How is it done and how long does it take?
Were you able to stay the whole time with your dog? Just for part of it?

(I dont trust some of the Vet techs where i go with her and she had FA and SA.. I dont feel comfortable leaving her there without me. I am hoping i can stay through it all if at all possible)

Never had that issue with dogs. No rich people food and no problems. Did have horses(deceased) Mares could develop that. simple procedure and your dog not theirs stay with dog. They have no right to to make you leave.

mine didn't need to be sedated. I just held her still while she was standing, took like 3 minutes or so. I just asked them if I was allowed to hold her, they would have taken her back if I didnt ask.

They had one person lift her tail and the vet carefully placed a syringe with a long thin tube into the anal gland opening, flushed it out with water, and then just inserted some cream. no cutting or drugs necessary.

Sorry more detail. I stood over my dog and sort of hugged her neck and talked to her in her ear because she feels relaxed when she's held like that for procedures. The one person held her tail, another tech held her hips to prevent her booty from moving all over. It irritated my dog a little bit when they first stuck the tube in because her gland was swollen, but she didn't cry and it wasn't excruciating for her otherwise I would have probably asked them to give her some pain medication prior.

Maybe you are thinking of something else, Skywalkers Mom, since horses don't have anal glands.

VTGirl, I hope this procedure will help your dog and eliminate her infections for good.

Mine weren't sedated either,,actually I use to do it myself,,you take a syringe (minus the needle) load it up with the antibiotic and inject it into the fistula/anal gland..
