Sopts on ears

I took my GSD to the vet, and they didn't know what it was. He had them on both ears, worse than they are now. Any ideas?

Does he scratch a lot? I've had dogs that gets spots exactly like that due to allergies. They lose the hair because the skin is irritated and they scratch quite a bit.

Pax8, that was my thought as well. The ear tips (poor circulation anyways) looks very dry.

The beginning of Fly strike? Does he stay outside a lot and are you religious about picking up poo?

This is awesome for a lot of ailments with the skin - including fly strikes (those large black flies love tips of ears).

Agree with jocoyn - make sure to get the poop picked up - if this is what you are dealing with.

ok, i will try to be more attentive to cleaning up his poo. He does not stay outside for more than 2-6 hours a day. often he is inside most of the day with the family. When i am outside I have yet to notice any fly problem when i am out back, but i usually don't spend more than 30 min outside unless its later in the day or i am doing yard work. thanks guys for the response. Sorry i didn't respond very quickly, i expected notifications when i received a reply.

There is something called ear tip vasculitis, but it can have many causes...
