Our big guy having knee surgery today, any tips on recovery?

As the title states our 9 month (almost 10) old pup is having knee surgery today. He is having TPLO. I've been reading tons about it, just wondering what people that have gone through this have experienced, what they did to wear out their dogs brain while they are laid up, how long did recovery take, etc. I've found some good things in other posts, just looking for more. Thanks everyone!

One of my high energy gsd's had knee surgery years ago, I was worried she'd be a royal pain in the butt...She did better than me:) Seemed to know her limitations, on leash while outside, water therapy/laser/acupuncture/chinese medicine helped in recovery process.

Lots of bones on down time:)

Ranger had his done in December and now has most of his freedom back. Look for a physical therapist. We used one for Range and so far the return to normal activity has been a smooth one. Take pictures of the leg from the get go, that can help document the progress, we used video too once he started out on short walks.

Our vet gave us a little different advice than others here have mentioned, he had us taking him out for short walks fairly soon after surgery, be sure to ask lots of questions or even better write up a list of questions, if your like me, you'll forget half of them. Find out if the vet will answer emails, ours was very good about this.

As for keeping him busy, there are puzzles you can try, we gave him beef knuckle bones occasionally and worked on focus.

Something else to consider, watch how much you feed. With the decease in activity, you may want to cut back just a little. Easy for weight to creep up.
