Unhappy Blood Filled Anal Glands

Our 9yo shepherd Gracey had her anal glands done a couple days ago and they were filled with blood. There was no typical anal gland matter or puss. It was all blood and something the looked like blood clots or possibly some sort of tissue. She is behaving normally, other that licking and chewing around her tail area recently. She has been healthy other than occasional unexplained loose stool that sometimes had blood in it. I have read a few things online that indicated it may be a fistula. Does that sound likely or could it possibly be something else?

This sounds like anal fistulas. Unfortunately they are common in gsds. There are many threads on this board about managing them. I would ask a mod to change your title to Anal Fistulas so that some of the people who have experience can help you.

So far the vet has said we should try antibiotics.

Start with antibiotics. Mist bets are not going to remove anal glands because of one infection. It's a procedure that can easily lead to fecals incontinance.

Yes, I would rather not have them removed if we can avoid that. She is older so we really don't want to do surgery. But even with an infection I have never heard of them being blood filled like that. That's why I was asking about the fistulas.

My girl had her anal glands removed six months ago and it was rough for a few days after the surgery I hope you can get it cleared up with meds and she won't need to have them removed but I can only stress to have this surgery done by a board certified surgeon and not by a regular veterinarian. There are many stories about dogs having issues after this surgery if the surgeon is not experienced. Here is a good article: Anal Sacculectomy

Good luck!
