Hip replacement or pain meds??

Hello All,
My German Shepherd is almost 7 and was first diagnosed with hip dysplasia when she was about 1 year old. Through the years she has been ok, an occasional limp, but most of the time she is her usual, full of energy, self. Over the last year, she has been much worse. She is having trouble walking up the steps, she can walk them but she is very slow. She doesn't jump on the couch anymore, and she has been yelping sometimes when getting up.

So we took her to the vet today and they did xrays. The vet said she has severe dysplasia in both hips and arthritis. We talked about hip replacement surgery but he said he would recommend waiting on that. He gave her pain medicine instead.

I don't know what to do. I can't stand seeing her in pain. Has anyone else been in this situation. Did you choose pain medicine over having surgery. Did the pain meds help? I'm wondering if I should try to go see an orthopedic specialist to see what they say.
Thanks!

I'm so sorry to hear about your little one. It is not easy to see them suffer. I would recommend you take her to a specialist and see what they say. If you can, post the xrays here and others with more knowledge can give you their opinion on it. My 9 year old is on pain meds and just started Adequan shots.

Thank you for the reply. Did you choose pain meds over surgery? How is yours doing on the pain meds?

The reason I chose not to do a full hip replacement is her age. I think that would be really tough on a 9 year old. She is doing well on the pain meds (Tramadol) but you can tell she still has pain. Hoping the Adequan will help and I got an acupuncture treatment scheduled for next week. She couldn't tolerate the Deramaxx which did seem to help the pain but caused other problems. At 7 years old, there may be other things they could do for your furbaby, that is why I would recommend a specialist.
