big problem

hello all - haven`t been on here in a while well i visit but haven`t posted - you might remember me - i`m the one with SALEEN and i was looking for some one to adopt her - that was over a yr. ago - well me and my wife have a new problem - well not really new but here`s my story - we are moving to N.C. next month - and SALEEN`S [ LEAVING ANXIETY ] IS CRAZY - THE OTHER NITE WE WENT OUT TO DINNER FOR 2 HRS. AND WHEN WE CAME HOME WE SAW SHE HAD PEED IN 2 PLACES - THAT CAN HAPPEN but - she didn`t touch her own water - she went to the toilet and drank a gal. out of it [ dry ] it was as my wife say`s - she was mad because i had said something as we left - she is sooo attatched to me - we have to rent a house down there for 2 month`s , imagine we won`t be able to leave her alone and this is a rental - then when we have our new house we again have to hope she does not go crazy - my wife says its because i spoiled her [ baloney ] am i not suppose to love her - it`s almost like we can`t take her with us - DON`T KNOW WHAT TO DO ????

Long, drawn out, emotional goodbyes could make seperation anxiety worse.

So when you leave somewhere, how do you leave? As said in previous post, long drawn out goodbyes make for the worst.

Why not crate her when you are not home for short periods?

barker1953 05-23-2014 06:09 PM

Have a problem dog? Get another.

Get a pet for your dog.

You will generally not hear the above mentioned advice much here.

How can she protect if she is restrained?

Well, did you train the dog to protect? Most of us just need a deterrent. Even within a crate, the booming barks of a GSD can send a would-be burglar somewhere else.

Dogs with SA are a danger to themselves. They can eat things that could kill them. They can go through windows to get to their person. They can do enough damage, that people may give up in despair. When, a crate could have kept the dog safe. The crate does not have to be permanent. If the dog becomes less anxious with time, it may be ok to give the dog some more freedom.

I know some places culturally, have a different view of crates. But for dogs with problems, they can be a life saver.

big problem

well we really can`t use a buddy for SALEEN and we use to crate her a few yrs back - she would bend the cage and tear up her mouth getting out - so no solutions yet - i heard there is a liquid you put on her food that calms her down , anyone use this

there may may be over the counter stuff that will calm her, but not in this case. imho, you need to deal with the separation issue and retrain for the crate.

Is this the first time that you left the dog alone for two hours? What did she do in the past.
Peeing in two places and drinking out of a toilet is a small problem. Certainly not something to dump the dog for. Was she maybe upset because of a thunderstorm?

Rescue Remedy is probably what you are thinking of to put in the water. You could try a DAP collar as well.

I'm sure you've left Saleen alone in the time you have had her. Was there ever a problem before? Is this behavior something new that has come about since you started packing and stressing over moving? Can you contain her to a room with tile or linoleum?
