Default Adequan shots

I was wondering for those of you that get your dogs adequan shots, if you give it yourself or have the vet do it. How hard is it to give Adequan shots yourself?

I was buying the Adequan on Drs. Foster and Smith and giving them myself. It's pretty easy. I had the vet show me how to do it the first time. My vet now sells it to me at cost so I buy it from her now and if she's at my house for an appointment anyway she'll just give it to him (I'm so lucky).

I should add that originally I was doing the shots intramuscularly - as they are intended. But, if you do them in the rear leg you do have to be mindful of the nerve back there. My current vet said that she found Adequan to work just as well subcutaneously and gave me smaller needles (Mikko is very sensitive with shots) and it seems to be working fine.

Oh yes you are lucky. I do know how to do the subcutaneous shots but have never done the intramuscular ones.

Yes, we use it.
My husband gives the shots and it's given in-between the shoulder blades into the skin not muscle as recommended by our vet (some do it IM). I hold treats while he gives the shot as it burns.
Our initial dose was one per week for 4 weeks (loading dose) and then once per month unless the vet has a different schedule.
Your vet or tech should be able to instruct you for this or if you don't have the stomach for it the vet tech should be able to give it to your dog for small fee or no charge since you are purchasing it from your clinic.
Good luck!

That is interesting that both of you do it subcutaneously and not IM.

I have the vet give it in the muscle. I have read someplaces that it makes a difference, but other reads say it doesnt. I think if it works for your dog and you can give it yourself, why not? , its much cheaper that way and you can save money.

I have seen reports that absorption subq is greatly decreased so may not work as well. Cats often get it subq but their dose is usually doubled when given that way (do not change doses without speaking to your vet), I've always given it IM in dofs

There are studies out there that sub-q is just as effective as IM.

I gave it myself sub-Q to an Aussie. It didn't help him much and was awfully expensive. I don't think it applied to his issue though.
