20 Week Old GSD with Heart Murmur
We rescued a GSD a month ago and took him to get his shots just to find out he has a grade 6 heart murmur and they couldn't tell us how "life threatening" it was without a eco-cardiogram which I can't afford. I've been reading and reading and decided to feed him only "Fromm" Dog food which has all the Omega's and Taruine to help have a healthy heart.

Today was the 2nd set of shots for him and they told us that he sounded worse this round. I created a fund raiser to try and come up with the money to see if his heart murmur is serious enough to make him leave us too soon or if he will be okay, I'm not sure if I can post a link or not but would like any information that you all know about helping with a heart murmur.

If you've got any DIY remidies that could assist him in having a healthier heart or know a vet near "Lexington, KY" that can do the eco-cardiogram for next to nothing or out of kindness of helping out another pup, or just want to help please message me or leave a post!

I try to not tell anyone because I don't want anyone to think that there is something wrong with him and I should of gave him back. I called the breeder they offered a refund but I couldn't take him back he's already grown on us and he's very smart.

Thank you.

Will the breeder give you a refund and let you keep the pup? You could use the refund cash towards vet expenses.
I don't have any health care advise for you. Only my best wishes for healthy, happy days in you pups future.

I am so very sorry about your puppy. A grade 6 murmur is as bad as it gets. I know money is tight, but he really needs to be seen by a cardiologist. Maybe a vet school could do it for less money?

Finding out what kind of murmur it us will help determine treatment.

Good luck.

I'll look into the school thing but the breeder said to return the puppy if I wanted a refund which I couldn't do that. I wouldn't ever return a dog due to health issues they deserve to be cared for.

Will post back if I find a school cheap enough to help out thanks.

Home remedies will not change the structure of your dog's heart. I'm very sorry about your situation.

i wonder if like in some infants the pup will grow out of it.

If it was a grade 1-2 then the likelihood is yes, they grow out of it. A grade 6 will not be grown out of unfortunately.

PDA is very common in pups with murmurs and is easily corrected with surgery, the dogs will then live a normal life. Without the surgery, they'll die.

He needs to see a cardiologist. If you can't provide proper financial care then you should return him to the breeder. Pets are a privilege, not a right. And I don't mean to sound harsh because I know it's heartbreaking. But let this be a hard learned lesson, no one should get a pet before being financially stable (an echo on average costs 250-350$ which in the world of medicine is fairly inexpensive compared to many other diagnostic tests with specialists involved).

It could be a defect easily fixed with surgery. Or it could be a defect that could kill him

Also, check into "lemon laws" for the state of kentucky. Often times there are laws in place saying a breeder is financially responsible for any genetic defects that affect the pup before the first year or so of life. In other words, the breeder may be required by law to pay for medical expenses related to the defect without being able to demand the puppy back.

Is the pup a rescue or did you buy him from a breeder?
