Opinions Needed Please.

My Abbey now a little over two, built very differently than my last GSD. She is more lean and athletic...more like a Sports Car...my last girl built like a Mack Truck...:) she was so big people thought she was a boy.

Quick summary...after weening her off puppy food, she would have loose stools...not diarrhea, just loose, and often...so i started giving her Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach..mixed with a little of the canned food at dinner time only of the same variety...treats etc. Vet said it was a good choice...?? Wasnt thrilled, but every dog is different...and if she did well on it, then it was good for her..... Had her on Probiotics and Digestive enzyme, and after a few months didnt seem like it was making a difference... so i stopped giving it. All of a sudden poop situation got bad again.....Working with a local trainer recently, and was talking to her about the poop situation and her food...she said why dont you try grain free, PPSS has wheat in it, maybe she is allergic...so i looked at ingredients and prices etc for days, went to pet food advisor, and settled on Nature's Recipe Grain Free Salmon and sweet potato...PPSS is fish based as well, so i thought the transition would go smoother. It took 2 weeks to completely transition her over...and she loves the food...loves it, it actually smells pretty good.....anyway....thought she was having a little issue transitioning so i started the probiotic again, and see improvement...my problem is that she seems skinny and boney?...i know they go through the lanky stage?...She is active, always chasing the ball, always playing, sleeps through the night...she gets 2 cups in the AM and 2 cups in the PM...snacks...everyone says she looks alright?...but its like her butt is boney?....UTD on shots, no worms etc....any ideas...??? Seems since i switched her food she is less itchy too...im finding less hair around...i brush her every day, but really good every other day, thought the itchies might have been from dead hair driving her crazy?....and some days it just seems like she poops alot?....My sister had a white GSD that was skinny and boney his whole life, pooped every time he went out...ate IAMS and lived to be 12?...go figure....so am i driving myself crazy for no reason?

She is probably about 70lbs...give or take. And i cant see her ribs all the time, but i see them more than i want to, or i at least know where they are.

I have a 7 year old male. Weighs 85 lbs. he's always been skinny. I wouldn't worry about it. He poops twice a day. When he was between 3 and 6 years old and much more athletic, he topped out at 90. That was the max weight ever regardless of how much or what he ate.

You could try coconut oil which Traveler loves and/or Missing Link which is a food supplement that contains all kinds of good stuff. That puts weight on Traveler.

TY, for the response...i will look into both...i just want to make sure.

Was also wondering, what about adding another protein like boiled chicken?...will it upset her stomach if she is on a fish based food?...i also give her grain free treats as well....maybe an egg here and there?...but thats really it, she doesnt get table food or scraps.

My vet would probably say she looks fine, sounds like a pretty good weight, you don't need an obese female, as long as everything else is good, eggs are good, and chicken- not to worry- IMHO, Bob

I didn't start giving Traveler any scraps until he was 5 years old-maybe 6. He's been on Orijen regional red and/or Orijen 5 fish. Both are grain free. For treats he gets a raw frozen marrow soup bone. I don't think boiled chicken is going to put any weight on your pup if that's why you are asking. If it's just to ask about feeding something different, then I'd start with a little and keep your eye out for any negative reactions. Traveler happens to get allergic response to turkey and chicken and recently I had him tested for food sensitivities and whitefish and salmon came up really high:eek:

Wish I could offer more help but I'm not as experienced as lots of other members here.
