GI /virus

Hi - I wanted to know if any of you had experienced a virus going around. My Ziggy threw up on Wed. a.m. and then kept throwing up bile - twice - his stools are normal. Thursday, he spent the day at the vet - everything normal - X-rays, blood work, etc. He is now eating again but not very much. On Friday a.m., Allie my GSD, would not eat - this never happens. I took her in and her temp was elevated 103.1 - illness is serious for Allie as she has autoimmune polyarthritis. The vet said to take her home, give her a Cerenia and monitor her - an hour later she threw up - The vet said to give her another Cerenia as she threw up the whole tablet. Allie did not throw up anything all day, her stool is normal. She will not eat but did drink water. Last night her temp was up to 103.8 and she was limping. I was concerned as she was not getting her twice daily prednisone (she takes 2.5 mg twice a day). Right now Allie is on an IV at the vet - fluids and prednisone.
I do not know what is causing this. My vet said she has had several dogs come in with GI upsets. The exterminator had put down a few ant granules on Monday but no one thinks that is the cause. I have not opened any new food bags and the canned food I opened on Tuesday, I discarded but it was from the same batch as the cans they have been eating.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Allie is very ill.

I hope Allie gets better soon...I hate it when they are sick :(

We just came back - Allie\'s temp is still 103.8 - was 104.4 before IV with dexamethasone - she has to be back at the hospital tomorrow at 7AM for another IV. Doctor does not think it is related to Ziggy\'s GI incident. Thinks it is related to problem in this thread http://www.germanshepherds.com/forum...diagnosis.html

I would treat aggressively for TBD, with no concurrent steroids. Might consider adding an anti-fungal at the same time.

tick panel was negative a short time ago; have not seen any ticks in Las Vegas and she has not been with us on trips to Mt. Charleston. Just came back from Sunday treatment - IV and 10 mg pred. - also has explosive diarrehea now - back on metronidazole as well.

It sounds like she has been on steroids.... You can't suddenly take her off without making things worse.

Yes, Allie has an autoimmune disorder and is on prednisone all of the time - 5 mg per day, usually. The doctor is concerned that Allie is having a set back - does not feel the GI disorder had anything to do with the autoimmune except she is concerned that Allie is now having a worse autoimmune problem - her temp is back down after the IVs and increased prednisone so hopefully she can get back on track. However, there is a GI disorder going around my part of Las Vegas.

I would definitely not keep bringing her home overnight and off steroids and IV medications. Isn't there an emergency or 24 hour clinic you can transfer to for continued overnight care?

I've never liked to see cases where the dog is pretty sick and on/off IV fluids and medications. Doesn't benefit the patient at all
