Hyper-Sensitivity to fleas..

This is the diagnosis for Midnite and his itchy skin with fur loss problem. Not a flea or any signs of flea dirt or bites on him. He just can't have them in his environment:( The vet recommended cleaning the house from top to bottom and treating the yard. She also recommended limiting him to a small area, well I'm not liking that, I got a yard for the dogs to enjoy. I chose not to go with a commercial chemical spray but something called Mosquito Barrier that is a strong natural garlic spray. I can't do anything with it because we are looking at rain all week and I need 24 hours without rain. I also got a natural flea and tick spray with cedar oil in it, which also works on skin issues like hot spots, etc. they did give him a steroid shot so I have time to clean everything. I am going to use the DE in the house in the carpet and upholstered furniture. The good news is that Midnites diet is working , he is down to 87.5. Only about another 8 pounds. I didn't think it was working and I just started noticing the difference, so of course he had blood work with thyroid panel just to make sure it's the diet not an illness.

My family has a 12 year old Black Lab who to this day has really bad flea problems, he started losing fur when he was 7, and went down hill since. Since we live in the south in the summer it gets really bad. To help prevent it we clean the house and give oral and topical flea medication. We also bath in oatmeal and flea control shampoo twice a month and this help a lot he has his hair back and is better. I hope this helps!

I tried the natural method for fleas and ticks. Actually was using Springtime Bug Off garlic for several months straight then Rusty ended up getting fleas. This was the first Fall we had him he was about 7-8 months. I got rid of the fleas fast (I did use DE in the house and in the yard - still put it in the yard and think it works very well) but it wreaked havoc on his immune system / his skin was a MESS and the fleas had been long gone. I know the mess those stupid things can cause on some dogs:( He also ended up with a steroid shot just to give him temporary relief. At that time I ended up switching him to raw and after a few months he was back to normal.

Hate to say it but that made me so scared of a flea bite that I ended up using Frontline on him during the peak season. No fleas since. I hope to try a natural method again in the future because I just hate the thought of chemicals - as a family we are careful with what we eat and the products we use.

Just last weekend my husband got DE down in the yard. Give that a try.

When I put it in the house when he had fleas I got it along the baseboards and then went back a week later and vacuumed it up- was careful to bag the remnants. I know some people have put DE on the dog - I found it to really dry the skin out.

Good luck - poor guy dealing with the stupid fleas - glad to hear he's getting a better waistline:)

I did put the DE on him and I'm now wondering if that wasn't part of the problem to begin with. That stuff is dusty and I could feel it in my lungs. I have treated all upholstered and carpeted areas with the DE inside, I'm waiting for rain to stop so I can work on the outside. He is getting nexgard this month, I will do the topical if needed for the poor guy.
