My new rescue. Bad habits or health issue?

My Maverick was fostered for 5 months at a horse ranch with lots of other dogs and animals. I was told he is between 1.5 and 3 years old. He is underweight and his coat is very thin. Foster mommy said he wouldn't gain any weight because he is really active. His skin does not look like it is in very good condition and he has some spots that he constantly nibbles on. Is this anything I should be immediately concerned about? Are there any natural/inexpensive things I can do to help?

I am going to take him to the vet as soon as possible b/c he has to get blood drawn. He is on Phenobarbital for seizures. I do want to bring up these concerns but wanted some peace of mind before doing so. Thanks in advance.

Your best move is having the vet check him out. His issues may be due to stress and/or what they were feeding him. The seizure meds may add another factor. Just some thoughts--but the vet is your best source.

Congratulations! Glad you were able to rescue Maverick. Not sure what's causing the problem, hope the vet will have some answers. With my allergy dog, I give her a couple tablespoons of extra virgin, cold pressed coconut oil, it has helped her coat and decreased the itching.

How often do you give the coconut oil?

My Dalmatian had similar hair loss and pinkish fur/skin on his back, the Vet told me it was "Dalmatian Bronzing Syndrome" but we are not quite sure that was what it was. Anyways I ended up switching to a higher quality kibble than what I was feeding, I give him salmon oil everyday and a multivitamin plus pill everyday, when I bathe him I bathe him with a sensitive skin/coat shampoo and his fur/skin is almost back to normal. :)
