Unhappy Anal Furunculosis Questions

Hey everyone,

So I recently adopted a 3 year old GSD named Mac. He is diagnosed with this condition and I'm not sure what to do. I've had multiple shepherds so far and none have had this problem until now.

I have an appointment scheduled with a veterinary dermatologist tomorrow but I would like to know if anyone has had a dog with this before. He has lots of constipation and most times cannot pass stool. Lots of grunting and straining which is very hard to watch.

Any suggestions?

Anal furunculosis is more commonly known as perianal fistula in Canada/US and we have lots of members who have had PF dogs. Bumping your thread so it can get noticed today. You can do a search on this site for perianal fistulas and there will be lots of threads.

There is also a yahoo group called PF-L with a lot of members. Don't normally mention other forums but that is a very specific condition that crosses many breed lines.

Been through it. I know it is immune system related. My last dog who was PF passed away in 2008 so I am sure much more info since then. I will say that we gave him a fiber supplement that really seemed to help keep things soft.........

It is a tough road.

Been there down this twice.. The above link is the main PF site, there is also a listing of vets by state that are experienced in the condition.

Not sure a dermatologist will do much good, but it's worth a try..And yes it can be a tough road.

You want to find out/figure out 'why', is it an anal gland issue? Or otherwise. IF it's an anal gland issue, I'd have the glands removed.

Alot of dogs that have PF's if it's other than a gland issue, usually have other issues going on, allergies, ibd, epi, etc..

Check out the website and I encourage you to join the group/email list, you'll get tons of advice/suggestions and support

My Riley had perianal fistulas and the Yahoo group was a great support. The treatments are many and varied and I am not up to date on it. Riley was last treated with a topical ointment but went thru laser surgery, all the various medications, etc. She lived with the condition in relative comfort and died in March 2001 of a stroke - age unknown as she was a rescue.
