Hi all, I am new to this forum, so let me tell you a bit about me first. I am 28 years old and I currently live in Las Vegas with my wife, our tortoise 'Nima' and our Holland Lop Dwarf Rabbit 'Pancake'. We live by the university in a large house with half acre lot. We both go to school and I am a contractor.

I bought a GSD a couple weeks ago and this little puppy 'Sonny' is my first dog ever. I picked him up from a ranch in Lancaster, CA and he had ticks all over his body when I picked him up, so I drove to a vet immediately and had them all removed and got him vectra for three month dose and they prescribed some antibiotics for the scars he got from the tick removals. When we came back home I signed him up for a great one year health plan at Paradise Pet Hospital but couldn't start his vaccination until 3 days ago because of the antibiotics. He is 9 weeks old, eats Royal Canin Puppy food, and currently weighs about 13 pounds.

After he got his first set of shots the vet also suggested a deworming medication and took a fecal sample for further checkup. When we came home he started acting lethargic and slept even more than he did before and at night his poop included a massive amount of large adult roundworms for the first time. Unfortunately he is not house trained yet and he pooped on the carpet. He has passed the worms now and the poop is back to normal and he also has another dosage of the deworming medication than he will receive 10 days after the first one. I didn't clean the carpet because his poop is solid and doesn't leave a residue. But I heard the larvae of roundworms are not visible and I was wondering if it is possible for him to get reinfected by the carpet so I want to know if I should get the carpets washed professionally and if that even helps.

Thank you very much in advance and I just want to say that I am very excited about this website and also about this beautiful majestic creature.

I would ask the vet if your pup can get reinfected from any roundworm larvae in the carpet. But, even though it was solid poop, I would still use an enzyme cleaner on the area so the pup can't smell where he went and have another accident.

Roundworms can also infect people. It's not just the dog that's at risk of infection.

This article suggests steam is effective against the eggs, but chemicals are not:

I live in Green Valley. Both of my dogs tested positive for roundworm a few months after we moved here from Miami - they had never had roundworms before but we think it may have been contracted in all of the stops / hotels we stayed at out driving from Miami to Las Vegas. Legacy Hospital treated it and both are worm free. I did use a steam cleaner as I have all tile and wood floors. I do not have any grass nor do I have a 1/2 acre - I envy you. I was really concerned that my husband and I would get roundworms and did wash everything. Agree that you should treat the carpet - Nature's Miracle is great.

Good luck with Sunny. Let me know if you need any information re vets, food, etc. as I spent a lot of time doing that after we moved here in Dec. 2012 and have been through a lot of the years with my GSDs.
