Default Pet Insurance

What kind of pet insurance do you have and how much do you pay per month? Is it a reimbursement plan or a deductible and 80% coverage immediately with nothing out of pocket except a co-pay?
Thank you!

I have petplan I pay around $35 a month. I have discount for her being microchipped and one for enrolling online. There are multiple plans to choose from.

My plan is $200 deductible per issue/illness (that is for everything involving that incident not each visit). Mine is 100% after the 200 is met. You pay for it then the send you a check about two weeks later.

There have been a couple of good threads on pet insurance analyzing different companies and plans. They helped me decide on the Petplan policy that I have. I'm sure others may chime in, but do a search on 'pet insurance'. It's a good place to start.

We have Petplan also and our premium is currently $62 a month. I signed Nikki up in Jan 2010 and our premium started out at $34 a month, it has increased a little each year.

I also have a $200 deductible per incident/illness and 100% reimbursement after deductible is met. You have to pay the bill upfront and Petplan will send a check about two weeks after receiving your claim.

I don't have any pet insurance just yet. I'm licensed in (people) health & life insurance, and after reading through the policies, I wasn't impressed on most of them. The only one I considered and still might use is Trupanion. My friend has a Dogue du Bordeaux who recently needed a THR. The surgeon's fees and cost of the implants were $5495.00 and Trupanion paid $4,942.80 of the claim. Overall, Trupanion paid out over $9,000 for the THR, which is quite incredible. I believe her premium is around $75/month. She had Petplan previously but got rid of it when Petplan did not pay anything regarding her other dog's IBD crisis (which totaled $10,000.) I also believe that Trupanion will cover a lot of genetic conditions like HD that other companies won't. As always, Trupanion won't cover pre-existing conditions. Just food for thought. I am not affiliated with any of these insurance companies, for the record. If I were to get insurance, I would personally look at Trupanion because their policies seem to be relatively favorable.

Zlata: Was the IBD a pre-existing condition for your friends dog? Something doesn't sound right here.

I have NEVER had a problem with getting any of my claims paid with Petplan and Nikki has EPI, IBD, B12 deficiency & atopy. Petplan has paid for every test she needed, specialists, surgeries you name it.

Here is a breakdown of what Petplan has paid out for Nikki over the years from another thread and her conditions need treatment for life:

************************************************** ***********
http://www.germanshepherds.com/forum/health-issues/304010-insurance-recommendations-3.html

I decided to add up Nikki's EOB's for each year to see how much PetPlan has reimbursed us so far. Nikki needs treatment the rest of her life for her EPI/IBD/Atopy/B12 Deficiency. Maybe this will help people decide if insurance is worth it or not for them

1st year (Jan 2010) - I paid $387 in premiums
PetPlan paid $8517

2nd year 2011 - I paid $439
PetPlan paid $8703

3rd year 2012 - I paid $488
PetPlan paid $9347

4th year 2013 - I will pay $602
PetPlan has paid $3644 so far

I know petplan does cover genetic conditions if they are not pre-existing. They paid on my dog's medication for a mild HD diagnosis. Even the vet visit and x-rays that diagnosed it were in there.

Healthy Paws. $35/ mth. Yearly deductible of $250 and 90% coverage.

Trupanion has some wacky clauses and petplan has a deductible per incident.

Excuse the ignorance.. I have dabbled in it a couple times but for lack of understanding I have backed out.

So does that mean the deductible accumulated throughout the year and includes all vet bills from shots, to medication etc, and once you go over the $250, is when they will reimburse 90% of your cost?
