Impossible to keep my pup sedated...

Hello all,

My Zeus was fixed yesterday at 14 month. Several reasons that it was the right time to do it and one of them was that we needed to have umbilical hernia repaired, it was on the larger side.

Everything went well.

Question one: Any other option than this awful cone of destruction??? I have more cuts from this cone than I did from teething puppy. It also bends his ears and I tried the largest round tube collar from petsmart with no luck, he can reach just fine because of his long muzzle.

Question two: He got home from surgery and wanted to go outside and play ball........ or hose... are you kidding me? They said he would not eat for a day or two, yeah right he came home and he was like FEED ME NOW I HAVE NOT ATE SINCE YESTERDAY! They gave him tremadol and ace, well temadol is doing a good job with pain, so good that he is way too active and ace is doing absolutely nothing to sedate him. I am trying to keep him penned or crated but that awful cone is so huge! we have the largest crate and he can't turn around. I have no idea how we are going to do this for 10 days.

Anyone els had a dog after major surgery or minor I guess and how in the world do you keep them from making a sudden jump or burst into running. Yep on leash...

Thank you all!

Neko, when I first read the title I about had a heart attack! "Impossible to keep my pup" and my heart stopped! Then I saw "sedated" phew! :wild:

It's problem, but a good problem, so glad Zeus came through with flying colors!

I can make one suggestion, try to get a soft cone. At least that will help with the crate/turning/comfort issue.

Here's a couple of examples: http://www.petco.com/product/108491/...Cone.aspx'

yeah definitely leash, tho it's a pain,,I never used the cones, only because mine didn't really need them..I just kept constant supervision that they didn't lick their incisions,,at nite impossible, but mine always sleep with me anyhow, so I figured I'd probably "hear" them..

So maybe keep the cone off when you can supervise???

Hey Gwen, I am glad the catchy title is working HAHA

I got a large one and petsmart did not have a soft cone, I will try petco!

P.S. I totally forgot to mention that I asked the vet to snap an image of his hips. I was told there is nothing to worry about and keep doing what we doing :)

well darn, can't get the first link to work. Trying it again...

Jako he goes right for it immediately and fight me when i try to stop and redirect. I think its the belly button that he is going after. I did take the cone off a few times so he can scratch his head and have his ears strait for a bit. I am calling petco to see if they have a soft cone.

Sign i wish i ordered it earlier they only have it online and by the time it comes in he wont need it. what about some custom pants and shirt :) ?

JakodaCD OA 03-12-2014 09:58 PM

that might work, take a big t shirt, and cover the incision..It's probably itchy, feels weird so he's gonna go for it:(

Neko 03-12-2014 10:00 PM

We will try custom clothing while under supervision :)
