Renji is getting Prozac today. While we are hoping it will help with anxiety and aggression, there is also concern that the SSRI will make things worse. We were told to expect about six weeks for improvement but I've ran into a few articles that said negative impacts could be seen far quicker. For those of you who have used Prozac (fluoxetine) on your dogs, what have you noticed? Prescription mood-altering medication is mostly uncharted territory for us; he did react very poorly to Anxitane. Rescue Remedy and Springtime's Stress Free Calmplex do help but not nearly enough.
Woolf is on flouxetine now. We quickly saw improvement in his sleeping habits. He was always on - alert, ready to jump even in sleep - I believe it was the 3rd or 4th night, he zonked out, completely relaxed and slept good. First time I had ever saw him completely relax and get some good sleep. That was during the period he was on the full dose for his weight, which we quickly realized was to much, so dropped it by 2 mg.
It took about 3 weeks to see significant improvement in his ability to absorb the behavioral training and begin learning coping skills. He is now on a much reduced dose and very slowly reducing it more. He is still a very managed dog, but very different then what he used to be.
There is the possibility of this drug class to have the opposite effect - increased aggression, irritability, sleeplessness, lack of appetite. From the research the vet and I did, Clomicalm (the other drug being considered for use) had a higher rate of this happening then with flouxetine. For Woolf, the side effect that we had to deal with for a time was lack of appetite. The appetite issue did appear quickly
Definitely stay on top of the liver, kidney and thyroid functions. It is recommended to check once a year, Woolf's is checked more frequently.
