Nails too soft?

I've owned lots of dogs from lots of breeds. ALL needed regular nail clipping either by us or by the vet techs. That includes my now departed Max, a GSD.

Not so with my new Zeus (16 months now). His nails are ALWAYS short and sometimes they're so short I worry about them on the pavement where we do most of our walks.

So, is my Zeus unusual in that his nails seem very soft. And, has anyone seen problems with their GSD from soft nails. If so, what should I watch out for?

There is an autoimmune disorder that causes nails to slough off or split SLO. A few threads on here about it. Not saying this is the cause of Zeus's, but worth checking into. GSD's are one of the breeds that are affected by it.

I'll look into it.

Thanks.
