As you all may know Roxie has mild hip dysplasia and somewhat severe arthritis in her rear hips. I have noticed that her right rear leg bothers her the most while walking and she begins to cross the leg after walking for 5-10 minutes. I had her tested for DM (Degenerative Myelopathy) and it came back NEGATIVE
After this news I went to the vet for a check-up and after performing some x-rays on her hips he put her on Tramadol 50mg (2 tablets per day). This transition to Tramadol went quite alright although the first night was somewhat rough. I think she was just confused as to why she felt "different".
Today: She has been on Tramadol for about 6 months now and does completely fine with it. I have not given her any type of aspirin due to the side effects it brings along. While the Tramadol still mitigates the pain, Roxie still has trouble getting motivated in the morning to go outside to the bathroom (this could be because it has been -5*F lately!). At times she also has trouble with steps and balance.
With all of this being said I did a lot of research on Stem Cell surgery at Medivet America and have contacted them about a procedure. They have yet to give me a timeline for a appt. or cost but I would like some opinions from people that have had the procedure in the last year or perhaps even this year. I read a few threads on here and some people are completely against it due to the lack of results. I also found a few people who saw a complete transformation in their pet. My main concern isn't cost or results, I am most concerned about putting Roxie under anesthesia at her older age. She is currently ~8 years old and the thought of complications terrifies me.
